Learn more about SGMA and other topics at June 28-30 international conference
California’s new landmark groundwater rules will be a key focus during Toward Sustainable Groundwater in Agriculture: 2nd International Conference Linking Science and Policy June 28-30 in the San Francisco area.
Glenda Humiston, vice president of Agriculture & Natural Resources at UC Davis, will deliver a keynote address on the opening day: “California Perspectives: Agriculture at a Crossroads to Groundwater Sustainability?”
Under the 2014 Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), local and regional agencies are required to develop and implement sustainable groundwater plans under state oversight.
In addition to the conference plenary session, 10 experts will explore the finer details of SGMA.
Among the planned SGMA presentations are:
- Water availability and subsidence in California’s San Joaquin Valley – Michelle Sneed, hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey
- A comprehensive program to ensure sustainability – Vicki Kretsinger Grabert, president and principal hydrologist with Luhdorff & Scalmanini, Consulting Engineers
- What we can learn from California’s Central Valley streams – Sandi Matsumoto, associate director, California Water Program with The Nature Conservancy
- Special considerations for agricultural water agencies in California – Owen E. Kubit, senior water resources engineer at Provost & Pritchard Consulting Group
- Evaluating special act districts and court adjudications – Ruth Langridge, associate researcher, Center for International, Global and Regional Studies at UC Santa Cruz
More than 200 speakers plus poster presenters will be on hand. In addition to SGMA, other topics include:
- Nitrate policy
- Emerging contaminants
- Environmental justice
- Salinity policy

Organized by the Water Education Foundation and the UC Davis Robert M. Hagan Endowed Chair, the event will be held at the Hyatt Regency at the San Francisco Airport in Burlingame.
