Our Groundwater Tour Takes You Out of the Conference Room and into the Field
Get the latest updates on California groundwater and how it is being managed
Why learn about groundwater in a conference room? Join us in the field where groundwater actually is! During our Oct. 5 and 6 tour, we will explore several subbasins in the Sacramento Valley Groundwater Basin as we will travel through the agriculturally rich California counties of Yolo, Colusa, Glenn and Butte.
On the tour:
- We will take you to monitoring stations where operators will demonstrate how they measure groundwater levels.
- Groundwater-dependent farmers will show you their private pumps and how they are maximizing water use in their fields in times of drought.
- Geologists will show you impacts of overdraft and subsidence, and how to mitigate them.
- Water managers from several counties will update you on their implementation of California’s historic Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.
As on all of our tours, experts with decades of experience in this field will accompany us throughout the trip. Carl Hauge is former Chief Hydrogeologist for the California Department of Water Resources and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Groundwater Resources Association of California. Thomas Harter is the Robert M. Hagan Endowed Chair for Water Resources Management and Policy at the U.C. Davis Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources.
