Marin Municipal Water District proposes tighter lawn limits
The Marin Municipal Water District wants to set tighter limits on the size of lawns of new single-family homes. District staff said they’re working on a proposal to impose restrictions starting as early as January. Already, the state will only allow 25% of a landscape to be grass, and this applies to all homes and residential complexes. Limiting grass areas to 10% of a total landscape, or no larger than 1,000 square feet, could reduce outdoor water use by more than 60%, staff said at the Aug. 6 district board meeting. The state’s rule would still apply to remodels and commercial properties. “Nonfunctional turf grasses don’t have a place here,” board member Jed Smith said.
