Southern California Edison: Radioactive isotope detected in water at San Onofre nuclear plant ‘does not pose a risk’
Southern California Edison held its regular community engagement panel meeting in regard to the decommissioning of the retired San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station on Sept. 5, providing an update to a recent leak from a pressurizer during transportation, information about this year’s liquid “batch” releases, as well as a detection of radiation levels in the groundwater at the plant site. … The meeting informed attendees that in routine monitoring of their groundwater wells in the Unit 2 area of the retired generating station, SCE had noted a slightly elevated level of tritium, a rare and radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Upon discovery, officials tested a nearby sample that is not used for monitoring radioactivity, and discovered the signs of tritium, as well.
