Job Opening: Water News Curator
Remote Position
The Water Education Foundation is looking for a freelance journalist to curate Aquafornia, our weekday compilation of top water news from around California and the West.
The Aquafornia curator is a remote position ideally suited for a journalist who wants to keep up on water news and is an early riser. The curator scours the Internet starting about 6 a.m. (Pacific Time) for the latest water stories, commentaries and news releases and assembles them on our website. The curator remotely joins our journalism team about 8:30 a.m. as it decides the news lineup and makes other adjustments.
This is a contractor position — about 2.5 to 3 hours a day — that reports to our News & Publications Director. The role requires someone who can work independently and collaborate well with others in a fast-paced digital environment.
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded journalist knowledgeable about water issues in California and the Colorado River Basin.
The Water Education Foundation, an impartial nonprofit based in Sacramento, has been covering water news for nearly 50 years.
Skills/Experience
- Strong news judgment
- Digital fluency and proficiency
- Ability to identify trending topics of high interest to our water-oriented audience of policymakers, academics, journalists, scientists, engineers and the general public
Qualifications
- At least five years’ experience as a journalist, preferably including coverage of water/environmental issues in California or the Colorado River Basin, but ideally both regions
- Familiarity with key water issues and people – scientists, policymakers and other leaders
- Commitment to the ethical principles of journalism, including accuracy, fairness and balance
Monthly Pay: $2,000. This includes having 11 holidays off each year, a summer break the week of July 4th and a holiday break between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The holidays when we don’t publish Aquafornia besides the week of July 4th and between Christmas and New Year’s Day are Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, and Thanksgiving and the day after.
