Description: The California Department of Water Resources, Yolo Basin Foundation, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and California Project WET invite veteran Project WET educators to a flood-focused advanced Project WET workshop and field experience.
Join us to learn about the multiple benefits the Yolo Basin floodplain provides for wildlife, agriculture, and the important role the Yolo Bypass plays in providing flood protection for communities in the region.
We’ll hear from content experts about projects designed to reconnect floodplain habitat in the Yolo Bypass to improve passage for migrating salmon and climate resiliency, along with the challenges and benefits of farming and managing wildlife in the Yolo Basin.
Historically, floodplains and wetlands filled California’s Central Valley. They provided a smorgasbord of vegetation and insects for millions of migrating salmon and waterfowl. Levees, dikes, and development often separate rivers from floodplains to protect human communities.
Today new research is driving a change in this philosophy with a better understanding of how reconnected floodplains can enhance flood protection for communities while restoring vital ecosystem functions.
